Map: Russian Language Speakers in Post-Soviet Countries

Paige Lee, GENED 1140, December 2022

The map below shows the proportion of the population in a region who are native Russian speakers. In most cases, this data refers to people whose mother tongue is Russian or the language they speak at home is Russian. In select instances, I had to default to the proportion of people identifying as ethnic Russian. The countries with data include Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, and Kazakhstan (all former republics in the Soviet Union). It was not possible to find sufficient data sources for Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan. All of the data is from 2001 to 2014, and sources are on the about page.
